Sullivan County Park and Lake contains a 468 acre lake constructed in 1968 for swimming, boating and fishing and 400 acres of land for camping as well as a 9-hole golf course. The lake is well stocked with crappie and hybrid saugeye, as well as bass, bluegill and channel catfish. Water skiing is also very popular on lake Sullivan.
Shakamak State Ready to relax? Then head for Shakamak. Three man-made lakes offer 400 acres of water for fishing and boating while a new family aquatic center provides swimming fun. About two-thirds of the campsites are in a wooded area, offering cool shade in the summer and beautiful fall colors in autumn. Shakamak State Park in northeast Sullivan County.
Greene- Sullivan State Forest boasts primitive camping on several coalmine strip pits that produce super bluegill. The forest also offers great deer and turkey hunting. Horse camping is available with water for horses, pit toilets, tie rails/hitching posts and corrals.
Minnehaha Fish and Wildlife Area consists of over 12,000 acres of strip mined land, owned by Amax Coal Company and leased to the Department of Natural Resources. This area has several good pits for fishing. Deer, turkey, waterfowl and small game hunting is permitted.
Turtle Creek Reservoir is a 1,550-acre lake owned by Hoosier Energy, constructed as a cooling lake for the Merom Generating Station. The lake’s above normal water temperature, accelerates fish growth. Turtle Creek has been rated by "Field and Stream" as one of the top 10 bass lakes in the state.
You can venture over to Merom Bluff and stand high above the Wabash River and see well into Illinois to the West. The Bluff is full of history and local folklore make sure you check it all out on your visit. The Bluff hosts the annual Chautauqua Festival.
